William Jennings Bryan
About William Jennings Bryan
The Populist Democrat who ran for president three times and lost each time. Bryans Cross of Gold speech at the 1896 convention, advocating free silver, is one of the most famous in American history. Bryan served as Woodrow Wilsons Secretary of State. He was the prosecuting attorney in the Scopes Monkey Trial in 1925, arguing against the teaching of evolution. He died days after the trial ended. Bryan was called The Great Commoner for his populist appeal. His campaigns transformed the Democratic Party into the party of progressive reform.
