About John Adams

The first Vice President and second President of the United States. Adams was a leading advocate for independence, helping draft the Declaration of Independence. His presidency was dominated by the Quasi War with France and the Alien and Sedition Acts, which were widely criticized. Adams was the first president to live in the White House. He lost reelection to Thomas Jefferson in 1800 in a bitter contest. Adams and Jefferson later reconciled through an extensive correspondence. They both died on July 4, 1826.
