James Monroe
About James Monroe
The fifth President, known for the Monroe Doctrine, which declared that the Western Hemisphere was off limits to European colonization. Monroes presidency marked the Era of Good Feelings, a period of relative political harmony. He signed the Missouri Compromise of 1820, balancing free and slave states. Monroe served two terms with little opposition. The Monroe Doctrine became a cornerstone of American foreign policy for over a century, cited by presidents from Teddy Roosevelt to John F Kennedy.
