About Vaclav Havel

The Czech dissident and playwright who became President after the Velvet Revolution. Havel was a leading dissident against communist rule, imprisoned multiple times for his writings. His essay The Power of the Powerless influenced opposition movements across Eastern Europe. After the fall of communism in 1989, Havel was elected President of Czechoslovakia and later the Czech Republic. He served until 2003. Havel was a moral voice for human rights and democracy worldwide. His plays, influenced by the Theater of the Absurd, are performed internationally. Havel died in 2011.
