Ulysses S Grant
About Ulysses S Grant
The eighteenth President and Civil War commanding general who accepted Lees surrender at Appomattox. Grants presidency was marked by his vigorous enforcement of civil rights for African Americans, including crushing the Ku Klux Klan. However, his administration was plagued by corruption scandals involving his appointees. Grant was a brilliant military strategist but a poor judge of character in civilian life. His two terms saw passage of the 15th Amendment giving Black men the vote. Grants personal memoirs, completed days before his death, are considered a masterpiece of American literature.
