About Rutherford B Hayes

The nineteenth President elected in one of the most disputed elections in American history. Hayes lost the popular vote to Samuel Tilden but won the electoral vote through the Compromise of 1877, which ended Reconstruction by withdrawing federal troops from the South. Hayes was called His Fraudulency by critics. Despite the controversial election, Hayes was an honest and capable president who supported civil service reform. He pledged to serve only one term. His wife Lucy Hayes was the first First Lady to ban alcohol from the White House, earning the nickname Lemonade Lucy.
