About Rajiv Gandhi

The Indian Prime Minister from 1984 to 1989. Rajiv Gandhi became Prime Minister after his mother Indira Gandhi was assassinated. At 40, he was the youngest Indian Prime Minister. Rajiv initially brought hope for modernization and anti corruption. He sent Indian peacekeepers to Sri Lanka, which ended disastrously. Rajiv was assassinated by a Tamil Tiger suicide bomber in 1991 during an election campaign. His widow Sonia Gandhi later led the Congress Party. His son Rahul Gandhi continues in politics. The Gandhi Nehru family dynasty has dominated Indian politics for generations.
