About Indira Gandhi
The first and only female Prime Minister of India. Daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru, Gandhi was a powerful and controversial leader. She nationalized banks, launched the Green Revolution, and conducted Indias first nuclear test in 1974. She declared a State of Emergency from 1975 to 1977, suspending civil liberties and sterilizing millions. Gandhi was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards in 1984 after ordering military action at the Golden Temple. Her son Rajiv Gandhi succeeded her and was also assassinated in 1991.
