Mahatma Gandhi
About Mahatma Gandhi
The leader of Indias independence movement through nonviolent civil disobedience. Gandhi led the Salt March of 1930 and the Quit India Movement of 1942. His philosophy of satyagraha or truth force influenced civil rights movements worldwide. Gandhi was assassinated by a Hindu nationalist in 1948, months after India achieved independence. Gandhi never held formal political office but was the moral and political leader of the Indian freedom struggle. His simple lifestyle, including making his own clothes and living in an ashram, embodied his principles. Gandhis influence on Martin Luther King Jr and other civil rights leaders was profound.
