About Jawaharlal Nehru
The first Prime Minister of independent India, serving from 1947 to 1964. Nehru was a secular socialist who shaped Indias democratic institutions and non aligned foreign policy. He implemented five year plans for economic development and established Indias technical education system. Nehru was a close associate of Gandhi and was imprisoned multiple times during the independence struggle. His daughter Indira and grandson Rajiv also served as Prime Minister. Nehru was a prolific writer whose Discovery of India and Glimpses of World History are still read. His vision of a secular, democratic, modern India continues to shape the nation.
