Paul Kagame
About Paul Kagame
The Rwandan President who ended the 1994 genocide and rebuilt the country. Kagame led the Rwandan Patriotic Front, the rebel force that stopped the genocide. As President, he transformed Rwanda into one of Africas cleanest, safest, and fastest growing economies. Rwanda is called the Singapore of Africa. Kagame has been praised for development but criticized for authoritarianism, suppression of opposition, and alleged assassinations of critics abroad. He won elections with over 90 percent of the vote. Rwandas intervention in neighboring Congo drew international criticism. Kagame remains a polarizing figure, admired for rebuilding Rwanda and criticized for democratic backsliding.
