About Olusegun Obasanjo
The Nigerian President from 1999 to 2007 and a former military ruler. Obasanjo had previously been military head of state from 1976 to 1979, when he voluntarily handed power to a civilian government, the first Nigerian military leader to do so. He was imprisoned by the Abacha dictatorship in 1995. After Abachas death, Obasanjo was elected president in 1999, returning Nigeria to democracy. His presidency focused on fighting corruption and debt relief. He attempted to change the constitution for a third term but failed. Obasanjo has remained an elder statesman intervening in African crises.
