Millard Fillmore
About Millard Fillmore
The thirteenth President who succeeded Zachary Taylor. Fillmore signed the Compromise of 1850, including the controversial Fugitive Slave Act, which required northern states to return escaped slaves. This destroyed his political career. Fillmore never supported abolition, believing the Union must be preserved through compromise. He ran as the Know Nothing Party candidate in 1856, an anti immigrant party. Fillmore is generally ranked among the least effective presidents for his handling of the slavery crisis.
