About Martin Van Buren
The eighth President and the first born as a US citizen. Van Buren was a skilled political organizer who helped found the Democratic Party. His presidency was devastated by the Panic of 1837, a major economic depression that lasted for years. Van Buren was blamed for the economic crisis and lost reelection in 1840. Despite his political skills, he could not overcome the economic downturn. Van Buren later ran as the Free Soil Party candidate in 1848, opposing the extension of slavery. He was called The Little Magician for his political skill.
