Lech Walesa
About Lech Walesa
The Polish labor leader who co founded the Solidarity trade union and became President of Poland. Walesa won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1983 for his nonviolent struggle against communist rule. His Solidarity movement was the first independent trade union in the Soviet bloc. Walesas negotiations with the communist government in 1989 led to democratic elections that Solidarity won overwhelmingly. As President from 1990 to 1995, Walesa oversaw Polands transition to democracy and free markets. He was a controversial figure, known for his combative style and erratic behavior.
