John Tyler
About John Tyler
The tenth President and first to assume office after a presidents death. Tyler was expelled from the Whig Party while in office. He annexed the Republic of Texas in 1845, a major step toward westward expansion and the Mexican American War. Tyler was so unpopular that his own party disowned him. He was the first president to have a veto overridden by Congress. Tyler later supported the Confederacy and was elected to the Confederate Congress, the only former US president to hold that distinction.
