John Quincy Adams
About John Quincy Adams
The sixth President and son of John Adams. Adams won a controversial election decided by the House of Representatives after no candidate won a majority of electoral votes, allegedly through a corrupt bargain with Henry Clay. As president he proposed an ambitious national program of roads, canals, and a national university, most of which Congress rejected. After his presidency he served in the House of Representatives for 17 years, famously arguing the Amistad case before the Supreme Court. He was a passionate opponent of slavery.
