The Brazilian President from 2019 to 2022, often called the Trump of the Tropics. Bolsonaro was a military officer and long time congressman known for controversial statements about women, minorities, and the military dictatorship. His presidency was marked by Amazon deforestation, COVID 19 denialism, and attacks on democratic institutions. Bolsonaro lost the 2022 election to Lula but never formally conceded. His supporters stormed government buildings in Brasilia in January 2023, echoing the US Capitol riot. Bolsonaro was barred from running for office until 2030 for making unsubstantiated claims about the electoral system.
