About Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva

The Brazilian President who served from 2003 to 2010 and returned to office in 2023. Lula, a former metalworker and union leader, was the first working class President of Brazil. His social programs including Bolsa Familia lifted millions out of poverty. Brazil experienced strong economic growth during his presidency. After leaving office, Lula was convicted of corruption and imprisoned for 580 days. The convictions were annulled by the Supreme Court in 2021, allowing his political comeback. He defeated incumbent Jair Bolsonaro in the 2022 election. Lula remains one of the most influential figures in Latin American politics.
