Golda Meir
About Golda Meir
The fourth Prime Minister of Israel and the worlds third female head of government. Meir was born in Kiev and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She was a signatory of Israels Declaration of Independence in 1948. Her premiership was dominated by the Yom Kippur War of 1973, which caught Israel by surprise. Meir resigned the following year amid criticism over Israels lack of preparedness. She was called the Iron Lady of Israeli politics years before Margaret Thatcher. Meir died in 1978. Her complex legacy includes building Israeli institutions and the controversy of the Yom Kippur War intelligence failure.
