Harold Wilson
About Harold Wilson
The Labour Prime Minister who served two split terms from 1964 to 1970 and 1974 to 1976. Wilson was a brilliant Oxford economist who modernized the Labour Party. His government decriminalized homosexuality, abolished capital punishment, and expanded higher education. Wilson dealt with the Cyprus crisis, Rhodesian independence, and economic difficulties including the devaluation of the pound. He unexpectedly resigned in 1976, possibly due to early Alzheimers disease. Wilson was a shrewd political operator whose pipe and Gannex raincoat became iconic.
