Winston Churchill
About Winston Churchill
The iconic British leader who led his country through World War II. Churchills speeches in 1940, including We shall fight on the beaches and Their finest hour, rallied the British people during the darkest days of the war. He formed a coalition government and worked closely with Roosevelt and Stalin. Churchill was also a prolific writer, receiving the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953. He lost the 1945 election but returned as Prime Minister from 1951 to 1955. Churchill warned of the Iron Curtain in his 1946 Fulton speech, defining the Cold War. His complex legacy includes both wartime leadership and controversial views on empire and race.
