Gerald Ford
About Gerald Ford
The thirty eighth President and the only one never elected as president or vice president. Ford was appointed vice president after Spiro Agnew resigned, then assumed the presidency when Nixon resigned. His pardon of Nixon was controversial but may have helped the country move forward. Ford presided over the final withdrawal from Vietnam and the Mayaguez incident. He was known for his athleticism, having been a football star at the University of Michigan. Ford lost the 1976 election to Jimmy Carter, partly because of the Nixon pardon. He was the longest lived president before being surpassed by George H W Bush and Jimmy Carter.
