Franklin Pierce
About Franklin Pierce
The fourteenth President whose policies intensified sectional tensions before the Civil War. Pierce signed the Kansas Nebraska Act of 1854, which allowed settlers to decide on slavery in new territories, leading to violent conflict known as Bleeding Kansas. Pierce was a northern Democrat with southern sympathies. His presidency was also marked by personal tragedy, as his son was killed in a train accident just before the inauguration. Pierce was deeply unpopular in the North for his pro southern policies. He was not renominated by his party.
