Franklin D Roosevelt
About Franklin D Roosevelt
The thirty second President and the only one elected four times. FDR led the nation through the Great Depression and World War II. His New Deal programs included Social Security, banking reform, and massive public works. FDR was stricken with polio in 1921 and used a wheelchair, which was hidden from the public. His fireside chats used radio to communicate directly with Americans. FDR died on April 12, 1945, just weeks before the end of World War II in Europe. His leadership transformed the presidency and the federal government, creating the modern welfare state.
