Evo Morales
About Evo Morales
The first indigenous President of Bolivia. Morales, a former coca farmer and union leader, was elected in 2005. He nationalized oil and gas, redistributed land, and reduced poverty significantly. A new constitution in 2009 reflected indigenous values. Morales won a referendum to run for a third term. In 2019, he claimed a fourth term amid fraud allegations and was forced to resign after military pressure. He went into exile in Argentina. Morales returned to Bolivia in 2020 after his MAS party won the election. His presidency was historic for indigenous representation but ended in controversy over democratic norms.
