Barry Goldwater
About Barry Goldwater
The conservative Republican who lost the 1964 presidential election to Lyndon Johnson in a landslide. Goldwaters campaign launched the modern conservative movement. His advocacy for limited government and strong anti communism influenced a generation of conservatives including Ronald Reagan. Goldwater famously said extremism in defense of liberty is no vice. He later became a critic of the religious rights influence on the Republican Party. Goldwater is considered the father of the modern conservative movement, even though he personally lost disastrously.
