Andrew Johnson
About Andrew Johnson
The seventeenth President who assumed office after Lincolns assassination. Johnson was a southern Democrat who clashed with the Republican Congress over Reconstruction. He vetoed civil rights legislation and was the first president to be impeached, escaping conviction in the Senate by one vote. Johnsons lenient approach to the defeated South allowed white supremacist governments to take control. His presidency set back civil rights for African Americans by nearly a century. He was later elected to the Senate, the only former president to do so.
