Alvaro Uribe
About Alvaro Uribe
The Colombian President from 2002 to 2010. Uribe took a hard line against the FARC guerrillas, using US military aid under Plan Colombia. His security policies dramatically reduced kidnapping and violence. Uribe was extremely popular, with approval ratings above 80 percent. He was constitutionally barred from a third term. His protege Juan Manuel Santos continued the military pressure but then negotiated a peace deal with the FARC, which Uribe bitterly opposed. Uribe was later investigated for alleged ties to paramilitary groups. He remains a polarizing figure in Colombian politics.
