The sixteenth President who led the nation through the Civil War and emancipated enslaved people. Lincolns election triggered southern secession. His leadership preserved the Union and ended slavery through the Emancipation Proclamation and the 13th Amendment. Lincoln was a brilliant orator whose Gettysburg Address redefined the American purpose. He was shot by John Wilkes Booth at Fords Theatre on April 14, 1865, just days after the Confederate surrender. Lincoln is consistently ranked as the greatest American president. His humor, storytelling ability, and political genius were legendary.
