About Shinzo Abe
The longest serving Prime Minister in Japanese history. Abe served from 2006 to 2007 and again from 2012 to 2020. His economic policy called Abenomics used monetary easing, fiscal stimulus, and structural reform. Abe strengthened the Japanese military and sought to revise the pacifist constitution. He was assassinated in July 2022 while campaigning, shot by a man with a homemade weapon. His assassination shocked Japan, a country with very low rates of gun violence. Abes influence on Japanese politics continued through his successors even after leaving office.
