About Hideki Tojo
The Japanese Prime Minister during most of World War II. Tojo authorized the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, bringing the US into the war. He was a general in the Imperial Japanese Army and advocated for aggressive expansion. Tojo was responsible for war crimes including the Bataan Death March and abuse of prisoners of war. After Japans surrender, Tojo attempted suicide but survived. He was tried, convicted, and executed by hanging in 1948. Tojo symbolized Japanese militarism and remains a controversial figure in Japanese historical memory.
