Oliver Cromwell
About Oliver Cromwell
The military leader who overthrew the monarchy and ruled Britain as a republic. Cromwell led the Parliamentary army to victory in the English Civil War. He signed the death warrant of Charles I. As Lord Protector from 1653 to 1658, he governed as a military dictator. Cromwell brutally conquered Ireland, killing a large portion of the population. After his death, his son Richard proved incapable and the monarchy was restored. Cromwells body was exhumed and posthumously executed. He remains a deeply polarizing figure in British and Irish history.
