About Margaret Thatcher Detail

See Thatcher main entry. She was a grocers daughter from Grantham who became the most dominant peacetime prime minister of the 20th century. Thatcher defeated the Argentine invasion of the Falklands in 1982. She survived the IRA Brighton hotel bombing in 1984 by minutes. Her Bruges Speech in 1988 opposed European federalism, foreshadowing Brexit. She was the first woman to lead a major Western democracy. Thatcher was forced out by her own party in 1990 over the poll tax and European policy. She died in 2013. She remains the most admired and detested British prime minister of modern times.
