Harold Macmillan
About Harold Macmillan
The Conservative Prime Minister from 1957 to 1963, known as Supermac. Macmillan famously told the British people that they had never had it so good, referring to rising prosperity. He accelerated decolonization, granting independence to most of Britains African colonies. Macmillan rebuilt the special relationship with the US after the Suez Crisis. He was wounded five times in World War I. Macmillan resigned in 1963 due to ill health. He later became the Chancellor of Oxford University. His aristocratic manner concealed political shrewdness. The Profumo sex scandal damaged his government in 1963.
