About Edward Heath

The Conservative Prime Minister from 1970 to 1974. Heaths greatest achievement was taking Britain into the European Economic Community in 1973. His government faced severe industrial unrest, including the miners strike that led to the three day week. Heath called an election in 1974 on the question Who governs Britain? and lost. He was replaced as Conservative leader by Margaret Thatcher in 1975. Heath remained in Parliament until 2001, becoming the longest serving MP. He was a passionate sailor and musician. Heath never married, leading to speculation about his private life.
