About Sun Yat-sen

The founding father of the Republic of China. Sun Yat-sen was a medical doctor who became a revolutionary, seeking to overthrow the Qing Dynasty. He became the provisional first president of the Republic of China in 1912. His Three Principles of the People: nationalism, democracy, and livelihood, guided both the Kuomintang and the Communist Party. Sun never held effective power, as China fragmented under warlords. He died in 1925. Both the Peoples Republic of China and Taiwan claim Sun as a founding father. He is one of the few figures respected by both communist and nationalist Chinese.
