Chiang Kai-shek
About Chiang Kai-shek
The Chinese Nationalist leader who governed mainland China and later Taiwan. Chiang led China through World War II against Japan. His government was corrupt and inefficient, losing the Chinese Civil War to Mao Zedongs Communists in 1949. Chiang retreated to Taiwan, ruling it under martial law as the Republic of China. He dreamed of retaking the mainland but never did. Chiang died in 1975. Taiwan transitioned to democracy in the 1980s under his son Chiang Ching-kuo. Chiangs legacy divides Taiwan between those who see him as a national hero and those who remember his White Terror repression.
