About Simón Bolívar

The Liberator who freed much of South America from Spanish rule. Bolivar led independence movements that liberated present day Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. He dreamed of a united Latin America but the geography and regional differences made this impossible. Bolivar died of tuberculosis in 1830, disappointed that his dream of continental unity had failed. The country of Bolivia is named after him. Bolivar was from an aristocratic Venezuelan family but devoted his life and fortune to liberation. His legacy as the George Washington of South America remains powerful across the continent.
