Robert Menzies
About Robert Menzies
The longest serving Prime Minister of Australia, serving a total of 18 years in two periods. Menzies founded the Liberal Party of Australia in 1944. He was a staunch monarchist and Anglophile who proudly declared himself British to the bootstraps. Menzies presided over postwar prosperity and the growth of Australian suburbia. He expanded university education and supported the arts. Menzies sent Australian troops to the Korean and Vietnam wars. His long dominance of Australian politics made him the defining figure of mid 20th century Australia.
