John Howard
About John Howard
The second longest serving Australian Prime Minister after Menzies, governing from 1996 to 2007. Howard implemented gun control after the 1996 Port Arthur massacre, a reform widely admired internationally. He introduced the Goods and Services Tax, strengthened immigration policies, and supported the US led wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Howard was a pragmatic conservative who maintained economic growth. He lost his own parliamentary seat in the 2007 election, only the second Prime Minister to do so.
