Norodom Sihanouk
About Norodom Sihanouk
The Cambodian king who held various titles over 60 years including king, prime minister, and head of state. Sihanouk tried to keep Cambodia neutral during the Vietnam War but was overthrown in 1970. He later allied with the Khmer Rouge against the US backed government. After the Khmer Rouge took power, Sihanouk was placed under house arrest. He returned to the throne in 1993 as a constitutional monarch. Sihanouk was a filmmaker, composer, and bon vivant. He abdicated in 2004 and died in 2012. His complicated political maneuvering reflected Cambodias tragic history during the Cold War.
