About Kofi Annan
The Ghanaian diplomat who served as the seventh UN Secretary General from 1997 to 2006. Annan received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001. He pursued reforms at the United Nations and advocated for human rights. Annan opposed the US led Iraq War, saying it was illegal without UN authorization. He established the Global Fund to fight AIDS, TB, and Malaria. After leaving the UN, Annan mediated crises in Kenya and Syria. He died in 2018. Annan was the first black African to head the United Nations and remains a symbol of international diplomacy.
