About Ibn Saud

The founder of modern Saudi Arabia. Ibn Saud conquered the Arabian Peninsula, uniting it under his rule in 1932. He was the leader of the House of Saud, a desert warrior who fought rival tribes. The discovery of oil in 1938 transformed his impoverished kingdom into a wealthy state. Ibn Saud had 45 sons by multiple wives. His sons have ruled Saudi Arabia successively. The Saudi succession has passed from brother to brother rather than father to son. Ibn Saud established the alliance with the US based on oil for security that defines the relationship to this day.
