About Corazon Aquino
The first female President of the Philippines and a symbol of democratic resistance. Aquino became the opposition candidate after her husband Senator Benigno Aquino Jr was assassinated at Manila airport in 1983. The People Power Revolution brought her to power after the fraudulent 1986 election. Aquino survived seven coup attempts during her presidency. She restored democratic institutions and a new constitution. Her government struggled with economic problems and natural disasters. Aquino stepped down in 1992. She died of cancer in 2009. Her son Benigno Aquino III served as President from 2010 to 2016.
