About Anwar Sadat
The Egyptian President who made peace with Israel and paid with his life. Sadat succeeded Nasser in 1970. He launched the October War against Israel in 1973, restoring Arab pride after the 1967 defeat. Sadat then dramatically shifted course, visiting Jerusalem in 1977 and making peace with Israel at Camp David in 1978. He and Menachem Begin received the Nobel Peace Prize. The peace treaty isolated Egypt in the Arab world. Sadat was assassinated by Islamic extremists during a military parade in Cairo in October 1981. His killers opposed the peace with Israel. Sadat was a bold leader whose courage changed the Middle East.
