About Raul Castro

The second leader of communist Cuba and brother of Fidel. Raul Castro succeeded his brother in 2008 and gradually implemented economic reforms, allowing more private enterprise. He normalized relations with the United States in 2015 under Obama, a historic breakthrough. The thaw was reversed by the Trump administration. Raul stepped down as President in 2018 but remained head of the Communist Party until 2021. Unlike his charismatic brother, Raul was a pragmatic administrator who managed the Cuban economy and military. His reforms were modest but represented the first significant changes in decades.
