About Helmut Kohl Detail
See Kohl main entry. He was the longest serving German Chancellor of the democratic era, governing from 1982 to 1998. Kohl was a massive man with a massive appetite, known for his love of Saumagen, a regional dish. He and French President Mitterrand were the architects of the Maastricht Treaty and the euro. Kohl insisted on German reunification within NATO, overcoming Soviet and Western objections. His legacy was damaged by a party finance scandal after he left office. Kohl died in 2017. His refusal to name anonymous donors violated German law and ended his honorary party chairmanship.
