About Felipe Gonzalez
The Spanish Prime Minister who governed for 14 years from 1982 to 1996. Gonzalez led Spain into the European Community in 1986 and modernized the economy. His government expanded healthcare and education. Gonzalez also faced controversy over the GAL death squads that targeted ETA terrorists in the 1980s. He was the longest serving democratic Prime Minister in Spanish history. Gonzalez transformed Spain from a post dictatorship backwater into a modern European democracy.
