Desmond Tutu
About Desmond Tutu
The South African Anglican Archbishop and anti apartheid activist. Tutu received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 for his nonviolent opposition to apartheid. He coined the term Rainbow Nation to describe post apartheid South Africa. Tutu chaired the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which heard testimony about human rights abuses from all sides. He was a moral voice who criticized both apartheid and post apartheid corruption. Tutu supported assisted dying, Palestinian rights, and LGBTQ inclusion, positions that put him at odds with some church leaders. He died in 2021.
